ZAMBALES, PHILIPPINES

My base for the meantime is Manila, Philippines.

I’ve been accepting makeup gigs since I got back last January.

Just recently, I was on a beach work trip for Nivea Sun. Together with featured surfers Noelle Hilario, Nicola Sebastian, and Bea Vega, the production team By The Sea and Nivea’s digital agency headed to Zambales for a two-day video shoot.

I personally use Nivea Sun products when I go to the beach. I like Nivea coz it doesn’t feel greasy on skin. So I was so happy to find out that they’re getting me to apply sun-kissed and barely there makeup on the three girls.

The girls already have golden brown skin so all I really had to do was put on cream foundation on them and make sure that the makeup won’t wash away when they hit the beach. For a natural glow, I used cream blush and highlight on the points that bounce off sunlight.

Here’s the video we created. Featured in this clip are fine surf beaches in the Philippines: Capones Island, Camara Island, and Crystal Beach. All of these places can be found north of Manila–in Zambales. It was a 3 hour-drive from the city but definitely worth our while.

THE LOUVRE, CHAMPS ELYSEES, ARC DU TRIOMPHE

I wanted to write a long one for these iconic places but I feel like the photos can speak for themselves.

Funny moments:

1) I was probably the only person in bright yellow in a sea of black that fateful day in Paris.

2) My umbrella flipped backwards which my friend Rhona caught on camera!

3) I went inside the flagship store of Hermes proudly totting my 10 pound Primark bag! hahahaha

DO IT YOURSELF

WHAT LACK OF RESOURCES CAN MAKE YOU DO

I couldn’t make it anymore obvious in my previous posts that I am a poor student living in England.

But I’m still a single lady with a desire to look “young” forever. Grooming is still at the top of the priority list. In my version of Maslow’s heirarchy of needs, image is more important than food. Yes, I am unashamed to declare that “I am vain”, like most of you out there are. 🙂 So let’s stop being sorry for caring about our appearances and start enjoying our vanity products!

Things I’ve learned here that I never in a million years would think I can ever do by myself:

1) Blow-dry my own hair almost everyday. I know it can harm my tresses but this cold weather will give me a headache if I go out with wet hair. I had to learn a technique called “sectioning”. I part my hair in “sections” starting from below upwards. I use a huge brush (£1 in Primark) and Babyliss’ turbo dryer (£10 on sale in Boots). I point the dryer downwards to make my hair look as straight as it is in the photo below.

20121211-110812.jpg

20121211-111335.jpg

2) Thread my own eyebrows. Back in Manila, I go to the salon twice a month to have my brows cleaned. Now, I had to learn how to use a thread and tweeze my own brows. Youtube became my bestfriend. I also now know how to cut my nails (but with some casualties, I broke one nail yesterday! Hahaha)

20121211-112540.jpg

3) Dye my own hair. I used to spend a lot of money to have my hair professionally dyed. I recently got tired of my red hair and decided to turn it into dark brown again. I bought a £5 Clairol foam dye and did it all by myself (But thanks to my classmate Aizee for helping me massage my scalp! Hahaha slumber party!). I was done in 25 minutes! What a huge savings from the £55 that a salon here would charge me for coloring. (Notice the inverted Wilkinson plastic bag I cut to serve as a protective cape?! Hahahah)

20121211-112353.jpg

20121211-115726.jpg

I used to depend on so many people when I prepare for work in the morning–a househelper to wash and iron my clothes, my dearest cousin/housemate to blow-dry my hair. Sometimes I even ask Karen of David’s salon to go to my unit to iron my hair. Too high maintenance! Now I think I’ve proven to myself that one can live independently and still look good and have fun! Yey to DIY!

WELCOME TO PETERBOROUGH

COUNTRYSIDE CITY

Peterborough. Pee-ter-bo-row. Pee-tah-bo-rah. Pee-tah-brah.Pee-tuh-brah!

It took us a while before we could pronounce the location of our University correctly. But it only took us a few minutes to appreciate the beauty of this city in the countryside.

We originally planned on finding a flat in London. But we found out that we have classes 3 to 4 times a week in Peterborough. It would be impractical to go back and forth because the fare is not cheap. Every time we would go back to London, it was like booking a one-way ticket from Manila to Boracay via airplane. For the past 2 weeks, we had been staying at Clark’s Inn which was like booking a night stay at the Peninsula every time we have school. The madness had to stop. We expedited our search for a house in Peterborough. Glad to share that we already found a cheap one! We will share our house-hunting experience in another post. 🙂

MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Our program is not easy. We have to endure 6 hours of straight lecture per subject. Talk about information overload! But we are lucky to have really good professors. Most of them are teaching in Harvard Business School and London School of Economics. Our tutors(British term for professors) travel from one continent to another to teach! While others have paid thousands of dollars to get the same education from these teachers, we enjoy the benefit of learning almost for free! We cannot complain.

Although the Peterborough campus is small, it’s part of a big network with Cambridge as our base. Our classmates come from different nations and we are finding it so much fun to learn from each other’s cultures.

From Clark’s Inn, we walk to the city center where Queensgate Mall is. The mall is just slightly bigger than Powerplant Mall in Rockwell but it houses brands like TK-Maxx (UK counterpart of TJ Maxx), Poundland, Topshop, Warehouse, Superdry, Republic, H&M, Accessorize, and John Lewis. Primark, the UK version of happy shopping wastelands Landmark and SM Department Stores, will open towards the end of the year!

PEACE AND QUIET

Everything about Peterborough spells peace and quiet. Aside from the subdued colours of the buildings, there’s a huge Cathedral of Church of England in the middle of the town.

People hang-out at the town plaza where there is a gazebo-like structure with pigeons flying around and small intermittent fountains that they turn on in the afternoon.

The University is a 15-minute walk from the mall. The house we found is only 3 minutes away from the mall. Every time we would walk from the University to the mall or vice versa, we would have to cross a bridge and pass-by Henry Penn Walk.

Henry Penn Walk is by the river where there are a flock of swans, ducks, and birds all living in peaceful harmony.

SERPENTINE LAKE

Also in Peterborough is Serpentine Lake.

Just a short distance from the lake is a hill. We climbed it once and saw the 360-degree view of the community. It was quite an experience!

Each time we would walk home, we would marvel at how the skies change colours. This is autumn sunset for you–

Peterborough, United Kingdom will be our home for the next 6 months. We will transfer to London during the second term where there are fewer classes and more research time.

Settling,

d.

JACK OF ALL TRADES

Master of None? 🙂

I’ve been wearing many hats since I got here. Here are some of them in photo boxes (a.k.a Instagram pictures):

[MBA Student]
I pass-by Harry Potter’s secret platform in King’s Cross everytime I head to Peterborough for school! I wonder if the muggles take notice.

20121013-180405.jpg

[Personal Shopper and Stylist]
New-found friend Darwin is taking his oath as a certified British citizen next week. He sought for assistance in picking out a suit. I was more than happy to shop at TopMan with him!

20121013-180501.jpg

[Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist]
Nicole has been a friend and client even when she was still in the Philippines. She’s now my first ever bridal makeup client here in London!

My friends know that I can’t do hair to save my life but since over here, you pretty much have to do everything yourself, I managed to fix Nicole’s bridal hair with the few pins that she had. What an achievement!

20121013-180607.jpg

[Babysitter]
I think I’m fairly good with babies. But not with crying ones. 😀 To make Blakey stop, I thought of a brilliant idea: put him on top of the table and take an awesome picture of him. As my former Brit boss would say, it was “a complete and utter failure”!

I think I have more luck with 4 year olds. Brent, Blakey’s older brother, is a shy one. But I’ve already taught him to do the thumbs up and the salute. Every morning, I hear him whisper near where I’m sleeping “Tita Duh-nis…”

This morning, since he had no school, he woke me up to show a ladybug stuck to his shovel. I was sincerely amazed. I’ve never seen an actual ladybug before.

[Party-goer]
This is by far my favorite occupation! Since friends are meeting-up with us left and right, we are out almost every night!

The most surreal night out so far was when we visited this gay bar called Heaven. There, they had a contest wherein gays from all nations compete with each other like in X-Factor. Only difference is that they aren’t judged by their singing but by how good they look when naked! 🙂

Finally, a straight guy! 🙂

20121014-001430.jpg

Too hot to handle! Had to go to some place cooler: Ice Bar along Heddon Street. Thanks to my high school classmate Eljin and boyfriend for showing us around.

20121014-001615.jpg

Earlier, I saw Chef Jamie Oliver’s Italian Restaurant in Westfield. If there’s one job I know I can’t take on, it’s anything that involves cooking!

TEA PARTY

BENCH SYSTEM
I was a nomad during my freshman year in Ateneo. Since my blockmates and I didn’t “own” a bench, we would squat at the ISO/SEC stairs in between classes. Sometimes, we would spend our breaks in far Sta. Lucia Mall. To this day I still don’t know the ending of the movie Perfect Storm ‘coz we miscalculated the length of the film and had to quickly go back for Sociology class! Pathetic, I know.

On some days I’d join my friend Rica and sit with the basketball players along EDSA Walk since her sister was at that time the girlfriend of a varsity player. It was hard to be the only 2 small girls in a bench full of 6-footers. We had to tip-toe and wave up high just to greet them. 🙂

MC BENCH
I couldn’t recall how or when a group of Ateneans from Miriam College High School ( MCHS, formerly known as Maryknoll) including myself gravitated towards each other and occupied one of the benches in SEC B. All 30 (plus or minus) of us now had a permanent bench we aptly called the MC Bench. Our neighboring benches were the “Holy Bench – from School of the Holy Spirit”, “PolSci Bench” and a bench we (secretly?) called the “Pogi Bench”. (Guess it’s not a secret anymore, huh? Hahahaha)

Now these girls and a boy (Hello, Jvic!) would talk about anything and everything under the sun during break. Fast forward to 2012, we still do the same but this time, during annual Christmas dinners, children’s parties, wedding receptions, and YOLO-themed birthday celebrations! 🙂

Tonight was one of those times. Tanya, the president of Handmaids of the Lord MC-Ateneo Chapter (LOL), celebrated her 30th birthday with a fabulous Tea Party.

FASCINATING TANYA
This party was 5 months in the making. It was the most awaited bench celebration of the year! (Aside from Ditas & Edward’s wedding in December of course!) In fact, I had to delay my flight a few days back just to be able to attend this fun party.

Tanya (who likes to be called by her “heiress name” Tatiana) urged everyone to come in a creative fascinator. Prizes up for grabs served as a good motivation to dress-up and wear a stylish headpiece.

TIARA by TRACY DIZON
I knew I’d wear a piece from Tiara by Tracy Dizon. Tracy was our high school classmate who joined Project Runway Philippines. She found her niche in millinery–creating one-of-a-kind hats and fascinators. I’ve been her client since 2010 when I launched the bodycare line Sakurabella and asked her to create a kimono-inpired fascinator.

Tracy has had collaborations with top designers Veejay Floresca and Joey Samson.

Veejay and Tracy were both contestants at the Japan Fashion Design Contest
in Tokyo and Tracy said that it was Veejay who first believed in her work–

“Veejay gave me the freedom I needed as a designer to create pieces that will complement and not overshadow his gowns. He did not dictate how I should design a piece. Veejay would just give me fabric swatches and I’d take inspiration from that when creating a fascinator or a veil. He respected my own turf.”

Tracy’s pieces start from PHP 3,000 / USD 70. Her workers used to design for internationally acclaimed hat designer Philip Treacy. Tiara by Tracy Dizon is also now available in Tokyo, Japan.

Tracy’s design aesthetic is vintage meets kawaii. Since she graudated with a degree in Clothing Technology at the University of the Philippines, it’s no surprise that she now specializes in sourcing quality fabrics. She also works as a clothing stylist for TV and Print.

SHU UEMURA

CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT
My friends know that I am never without a lipstick bullet in my pocket.

Frustrated from trying to pack light for the big move to London, I asked my Facebook friends “How does one pack her life away?” I got funny random answers from “make sure you have instant noodles in there” to “ok to be naked but never hungry!”

Funny because when I thought about my “can’t live withouts”, I only thought of three things: a shaver, Olay Regenerist moisturizer, and a lipstick.

I have been using Shu Uemura’s CR 330, a pinkish coral shade. I got frustrated when my Rimmel London Shocking Pink lipstick reached its last swipe. It was so hard for me to re-order since it was not available in the Philippines. I loved that product because it was matte and long-wearing.

AS A MATTE-R OF FACT
Do you know how hard it is to find good matte lipsticks in this country?! I have searched high and low for a replacement for my matte hot pink shade to no avail.

But one fine day, my dear friend Patrick Alcober of Shu Uemura posted on Instagram a photo of 2 ladies wearing MATTE LIPSTICKS and to say I was intrigued was an understatement.

I literally hyperventilated! I bombarded Patrick’s account with questions! The next day, I trooped to the Rockwell branch and tried the heavenly smooth (yes, you read that correctly) MATTE lipsticks!!! I know, how can a matte lipstick be oh so smooth?!

So I found out this latest lipstick line called ROUGE UNLIMITED SUPREME MATTE LIPSTICK from Shu has ceramide that makes the application smoother than most matte lipsticks. It doesn’t feel cakey or dry at all. But the color is highly-pigmented and long-wearing. It is indeed a delight!

I am very hard to impress when it comes to lipsticks but this one made me love the entire collection!

Makeup artists, you are all gonna love these shades!!!

Sorry for the overdose on exclamation points but this has really gotten me excited with a capital Eeeee!!! I am so excited, I am blogging about it now here at the Shu Uemura counter.

Look at the shades!!! (Pardon the unruly hair and foundation-less face! Told you, excited! Didn’t even get to fix my face first! Hahahaha)

20120918-120350.jpg

Thank you so much, Patrick!!!

20120918-120756.jpg

The glorious matte Shu Uemura lipsticks:

20120918-120850.jpg

The line has 44 shades which you can view on shuemura.com. Right now, the Philippine branches carry 5 colors: hot red, hot pink, pink, light pink, brown, and nude. Each bullet is PHP1,195 / USD 29.

LIPSTICK TEST
Let me share with you how I choose lipsticks:

1) Do the one swipe test. If with one swipe, you already got the vibrance you wanted, then the product has just the right amount of moisture you need.

2) It has to cover the darkest area of your lip usually around the edges.

3) It has to feel comfortable. Try to wet or top it off with a clear gloss in the middle of your lower lip. If it still looks good, buy it!

Hoard now,
d.
