3RD ANNIVERSARY!

Happy 3rd Anniversary to CoolDetour.com!!! 🙂

I’ve maintained this blog for 3 years now. I do not update it as often as I used to. And somewhere along the way, I decided to just update it whenever I get to travel or whenever my life has taken a significant “cool detour” worth writing about.

I’m keeping this blog for myself and for my future children. I write primarily to mark moments and process my experiences and emotions. I do not blog to brag nor do I write to appear like I’m an expert on something. I am just happy to throw my thoughts out there. I guess that’s really the essence of blogging — to have a log of all of your worthwhile moments and thoughts.

To mark another milestone, I’m gonna share with you how I got to choose my wedding gown. I’m not gonna show it yet but I will be posting photos of the “gowns that almost made it!” 🙂

*My official wedding gown is from Atelier Pronovias, Barcelona, Spain. I bought it from Mi Sueño Bridal Boutique owned by the pretty Pepper Periquet-Guanio.

Before Mi Sueño, I went to Rosa Clara to fit their gowns from the latest collection.

I immediately fell in love with this very simple sweetheart cut gown with matching a-line skirt. The only thing I did not like about this was the squirrel-like embellishment attached to the left hip. I sent this to my cousin and he felt like it was lacking the “me factor”. I guess he found it too simple. I think simple is elegant though. Oh well, to cut the long story short, I had to let go of this gown.

Also from Rosa Clara, this gown below made me consider something that has beadwork–

This picture, this moment, is very special for me and I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Mama for taking time off her busy schedule to accompany me on my first bridal gown fitting. This moment will be forever etched in my heart. Thank you, Mama, for all your love and care for me. One day, I will be the one to take care of you with everything that I’ve got.

I had to sleep on it before deciding. I also had schedules with fashion designers within the same week I visited Rosa Clara. A few of them had already sent their sketches even before I decided to pick an RTW gown and I am soooo very grateful for the effort they all exerted in creating these designs. If only I have enough patience to wait for something custom-made, I would have gotten a Filipino fashion designer to create my gown. But my heart and EQ are both too weak to wait a long time so I decided to just buy off-the-rack. I will just have it adjusted to fit me like second skin a few days before the wedding. Don’t get me wrong, I am still working with Filipino designers for our entourage, prenuptial shoots, and civil wedding.

10593338_693305264085101_1114972370_n

When it was about time to pay the gown in full, I went back to Mi Sueño and the atmosphere in that room can really make you want to try on more dresses. With the bridal assistant E’s insistent prodding, I tried on 2 more dresses. The one on the left is pretty but I didn’t want my chest to be covered coz it will be hot at the beach. This particular cut will also shorten my neck. The gown on the right though almost made me change my mind about the gown that I ultimately chose. I liked it coz it emphasised my curves.

But I am really not  a froufrou-skirt-wearing bride. I have decided earlier on that I am done seeing bridal gown skirts that are fluffier than nimbus clouds. I wanted to wear a dress that will still be in style in the next years to come. I think the froufrou skirt will come and go. It lacks the timelessness feel that I was gunning for. I don’t want my photos to look dated just coz my dress is reminiscent of a certain era. I want a classic cut that looks and feels ethereal.

When I posted this on Facebook, my notifications wouldn’t stop beeping, I had to hide this photo again. Perhaps my friends thought that this was my official wedding gown. It’s from the same designer, Pronovias, but definitely not the same dress. I also got scared that the gown I chose will now pale in comparison to this gown. I just had to find comfort in the fact that I know in my heart that’s more me than this gown. Plus the lightweight feel of the gown I chose is priceless! 🙂

10646845_10152741557704493_8264631654764196217_n

For brides-to-be out there, I really recommend trying ready-to-wear bridal gowns. They cut the creative process in half and they ultimately already give you a preview of how you are gonna look like on your wedding day. No surprises. I have heard of too many horror stories about wedding gown failures and booboos that I’m just glad I got this out of the way early in the planning stage. I was able to focus more on the other details of the wedding once I got “bridal gown” checked on my Wed Happy app!

More gowns and dresses in my future posts! 😉

Excited,

Mrs. DCW-to-be! 🙂

THE DANIEL WELLINGTON WATCH

I obsessed about this watch for days weeks!

I think I have been visiting the DanielWellington website at least twice a day since I came across it on Instagram.

I was specifically lusting over the Classic St. Andrews watch. It was everything I needed to complete my now streamlined watch collection–brown leather, rose gold metal, and Japanese movement.

1005164_10151769524114493_543989303_n

It’s sleek, preppy, and classy. The straps are interchangeable too!

I mentioned to the DBF that I like the watch BUT I didn’t think he would buy it for me! He did mention his plan of buying it online but he also said that the shipping would take days. And it would fail to arrive in time for his flight from Zürich (where he’s based) to London (where I’m studying). So it still came as a surprise to me when he gave me the cream and brown box when he arrived!

I’m telling you guys, the DBF is something else. He’s full of surprises and he really knows how to make me smile. I’m a very lucky and happy girl. 🙂

I styled the watch with my two current favourite bracelets from Accessorize.

1010055_10151769524029493_1267059083_n

I wore it to our weekend date in London.

1043885_10151769523584493_1949733718_n

I was kidding him that the reason why I like the watch is because of its brand initials: DW. If I happen to marry him, I would have the same initials! 😀

Ending this post with a quote I shared to my Facebook friends that I think they found truly inspiring:

“In human relationships, distance is not measured in miles but in affection. Two people can be right next to each other, yet miles apart. So stay in touch with those who truly matter to you. Not because it’s convenient, but because they’re worth the extra effort.”

Spread the love,

HOW TO IRON A DRESS SHIRT

My new gorgeous flatmate in Soho, Gonzo, promised to teach me how to iron properly.

He was a former Abercrombie & Fitch model and now a senior flight steward at Virgin Atlantic. He’s very particular with the way he dresses. Never goes out with a wrinkled shirt on!

I recorded our candid conversation with his friend Karl that takes ironing at a very high and serious level! Haha

What you need:

An ironing board
An iron (Gonzo gushes over his Tefal iron found in Hongkong that sells for £30)

Gonzo suggests that we invest on a good iron. For him, people give you the attention you deserve when you present yourself well. He says people appreciate those whom they see and know took effort in looking good especially when coming to work.

Steps:

(He insists on ironing the collar first because doing this last will wrinkle all the other parts you did first!)

20130614-082129.jpg

(Follow the seam of the sleeve; Create a straight line from the shoulders to the wrist.)

Yey! Thanks, G, for taking the time!

Here’s our 3-minute conversation:

Enjoy!

MUJI-FILLED MAKESHIFT CLOSET

I’ve been living in a suitcase and transferring houses here in London for the past 9 months. I can’t believe it has been more than half a year since I arrived here!!!

Today, I’ve finally settled in my friend’s room which I will occupy for the next 3 months.

Sharing with you how I organized my closet with the hangers I found inside the cabinet.

In Manila, all of my hangers are white. No wired and dangerous hangers for me. But since I have to make do with whatever I found, I only arranged the hangers from the colorful to the plain black ones to make it appear more pleasant to the eyes.

Jackets occupy the widest space in my closet because, well, I live in cold and breezy London.

20130607-150215.jpg

Packing cubes are God’s gifts to travellers like me! I love these cubes bought from Muji (along Oxford Street) because they are sleek, simple, and of good quality.

I like how I can just grab these cubes and dump ’em in the suitcase whenever I go on spontaneous trips.

All shorts in one cube. All basic tees in another. So on and so forth.

20130607-150832.jpg

The huge black duffel bag (extreme right on above photo) is also from Muji. I fold it and use it as my extra carry-on bag whenever I travel. I love that it can pass as a carry-on but it’s also durable enough to submit as a check-in luggage.

My housemate who’s a steward at Virgin Atlantic introduced me to these zip-loc-like clear plastic pouches from Muji. They don’t have zippers as locks so they are accepted as containers for liquids (not exceeding 100mL) and other toiletries in all airports. All of my makeup, toiletries, accessories and other valuables are in each pouch.

20130607-152249.jpg

When your schedule is as erratic as mine or when you are living in uncertainty, you need to give some sense of order in your space. Or you’ll be more stressed than you’re supposed to be! 🙂

I have a lot of backlog travel posts! Germany and Liechtenstein trips up next! Stay tuned.

DATE PAPARAZZI

It’s the boyfriend’s birthday today! Yey! But sadly, I am stuck in London while he is in Zurich.

We celebrated his 31st (Old!!!) over the weekend though.

He flew in. Again. Just to spend a few hours together.

Our dear friend Ferdie who’s studying at the London School of Photography took our “date” pictures. And yes, he was our “chaperone” the entire time. He’s our official “date paparazzi!” 🙂

It was a quiet and sunny spring weekend. We soaked up the sun at the SOHO Square and strolled along Oxford.

It’s a nice feeling when you can just hang-out with someone for hours.

You laugh about shallow things.

Challenge the other to a stare-off. 528287_10151616987149493_1877790670_n

And cringe at your own brand of cheeziness.

It’s also fun to imagine that you’re a celebrity couple walking down the streets of London.935066_10151616984524493_49123976_n

Newsflash: David and Victoria left their boys at home and are headed to the airport. LOL11796_10151615962394493_1994512022_n

It’s also nice to hang-out with couple friends. Nobody’s influencing anybody to break-out from the group and flirt around in the bar. We went out with our couple peg Kaye and Jeff and had dinner at Jamie Oliver’s Barbecoa. We ended up in Bar SOHO where we danced the night away.

APPS FOR THE NARCISSISTIC

Haven’t we all become such narcissists?! I know I have. Haha. What with all the technology allowing us to take pictures of ourselves and edit them the way we want to.

Yesterday, while on break from a 4 hour class, our classmates and I discovered a wall that we decided to use as backdrop for our little photo session. My classmate Aizee took a hundred pictures of me. It was an impromptu photoshoot so my hair was so distressed, barely any makeup on, and my clothes were my staple polo + cardigan + blazer outfit.

But I wanted photos to remind me of university life in the UK–stressful yet fun, colorful however taxing.

As soon as I collated the photos from my phone, I looked for editing apps.

I discovered Dubblen, an app that combines 2 photos in one.

20130411-151512.jpg

What if I had a clone?

20130412-113326.jpg

20130411-151411.jpg

Aside from Overgram, I also use Photolettering to put labels on my photos.

20130411-151711.jpg

This is D stessed with her assignments!

20130411-151750.jpg

I also stumbled upon Qwiki, an app that instantly edits your photos in your camera roll and turns it into an interesting video. This is easier to use than Splice.

More photos from the impromptu shoot:

Love yourself (but not too much ayt?! Haha),

VIGNETTES

Quick post for inspiration!

Yesterday, I peeled the shell of this one myself and saw a heart carved into the egg white! It’s “happy hearts” month! May you all have happy and resilient hearts throughout the year! 🙂

20130204-092418.jpg

I like changing my bedside vignette. It inspires me to get up and go in the morning. Today, I finally got to make the digital photo frame my cousin C gave me for Christmas to work. Here’s how I fixed my thingamajigs with the frame as backdrop.

20130204-092555.jpg

Soundtrack of my life right now. I always have to remind myself that nothing good gets away. And that I should never run away from a good thing. 😉

When You Got a Good Thing

Stay inspired,
