APPS FOR THE NARCISSISTIC

Haven’t we all become such narcissists?! I know I have. Haha. What with all the technology allowing us to take pictures of ourselves and edit them the way we want to.

Yesterday, while on break from a 4 hour class, our classmates and I discovered a wall that we decided to use as backdrop for our little photo session. My classmate Aizee took a hundred pictures of me. It was an impromptu photoshoot so my hair was so distressed, barely any makeup on, and my clothes were my staple polo + cardigan + blazer outfit.

But I wanted photos to remind me of university life in the UK–stressful yet fun, colorful however taxing.

As soon as I collated the photos from my phone, I looked for editing apps.

I discovered Dubblen, an app that combines 2 photos in one.

What if I had a clone?

Aside from Overgram, I also use Photolettering to put labels on my photos.

This is D stessed with her assignments!

I also stumbled upon Qwiki, an app that instantly edits your photos in your camera roll and turns it into an interesting video. This is easier to use than Splice.

More photos from the impromptu shoot:

Love yourself (but not too much ayt?! Haha),

VIGNETTES

Quick post for inspiration!

Yesterday, I peeled the shell of this one myself and saw a heart carved into the egg white! It’s “happy hearts” month! May you all have happy and resilient hearts throughout the year! 🙂

I like changing my bedside vignette. It inspires me to get up and go in the morning. Today, I finally got to make the digital photo frame my cousin C gave me for Christmas to work. Here’s how I fixed my thingamajigs with the frame as backdrop.

Soundtrack of my life right now. I always have to remind myself that nothing good gets away. And that I should never run away from a good thing. 😉

MISSING YOU

I miss Manila– the food, the company, and surprisingly, even the terrible traffic!

20130106-035044.jpg

I miss dancing– feeling the beat, sweating it out, and dancing with a fun partner.

20130106-035241.jpg

I miss my brother– those moments when we are bored as hell in the house and throw pillows at each other or go on spontaneous movie dates in Rockwell or eat-outs along Katipunan.

20130106-035629.jpg

I miss my cousins– I miss being the third-wheel to my cousins’ dates. I enjoy being their big sister, friend, and baby all at the same time. I also miss squeezing our healthy gwapo cousin Marts! 🙂

20130106-035434.jpg

I miss the beach– the powdery white sand on my feet, the heat of the sun, and the supply of bottomless long island iced tea.

20130106-035907.jpg

I miss surfing– that exhilarating feeling it gave me when I finally stood-up the board, it was priceless!

20130106-040028.jpg

I miss my fit body– It’s operation “bring sexy back” / “balik-alindog” once again. My daily routine has now become: jog, breakfast, shower, Church, study.

20130106-040200.jpg

FOMO, or Fear of Missing Out, is a disease that our generation has. I have it big time. I am constantly documenting my life, plugging into social networking sites, and multi-tasking for fear of missing out! I have to constantly remind myself that life is not about how much you have done but how much you have done well and how much you have savoured. 🙂

Taking it slow to cherish the good stuff this 2013,

FROM SACRE COEUR TO MOULIN ROUGE

We are not proud of this sequence of events in our itinerary but yes, we climbed up a thousand steps to pay respects at the Basilica of Sacre Coeur de Montmartre only to go down and proceed to the Red Light District of Paris to see the Moulin Rouge! God bless our souls. But they are close to each other and of course we didn’t do anything bad at the district aside from taking some photos that I cannot really upload here. 😉 DSC08491

DSC08544Next to the Tour Eiffel, I think that the Sacre Coeur is my favorite spot in Paris. It can be crowded but somehow you feel a sense of belonging in the chaos. Plus, it gives you a great view of the city. There were musicians playing, people singing along, and Catholics lining up to enter the Basilica.

The Sacre Coeur, ironically, is just a few blocks away from the Red Light District. As fans of the movie Moulin Rouge, we were eager to see the controversial cabaret.

Another weird place we visited this week was L’urgence Bar in Odeon. My jolie French sister Amelie took us there. It was a bar where they serve drinks in baby bottles and name them after condoms and viagra!

We have 2 more days to roam around France. We feel like we have already settled here. I will surely miss the food and the company!

Happy New Year, dear readers! It has been fun sharing my 2012 with you.

Enjoy your life’s cool detours,

FROM VERSAILLES TO PARIS

ULTIMATE DESTINATION

I was chatting with my former intern Sharllene just recently when I told her that I wanted to go to France before I turn 30. At that time, I did not even have plans of going out of the UK border. But the universe has its way of surprising us.

I got an invitation from my cousin C and his mom to spend the holidays in France. They were the ones who issued my Attestation Accueil that made the visa processing faster.

4 days ago, I found myself turning 29, a year in advance of the deadline I gave myself, in front of the Versailles Palace in France!!!

How lucky can one get?!

DSC07593

Apparently, quite lucky. C lives a minute away from the Versailles Chateau et Gardens (more of this to share with you in another post) so on my birthday, we toured the palace then went to PARIS.

Here’s what Wiki says about Versailles:

“The Palace of Versailles is a royal château inVersailles in the Île-de-France region of France. In French it is theChâteau de Versailles.

When the château was built, Versailles was a country village; today, however, it is a wealthy suburb of Paris, some 20 kilometres southwest of the French capital. The court of Versailles was the centre of political power in France from 1682, when Louis XIVmoved from Paris, until the royal family was forced to return to the capital in October 1789 after the beginning of the French Revolution. Versailles is therefore famous not only as a building, but as a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime.”

A few months ago, I would wear the Eiffel tower necklace that my magazine editor friend gave me to inspire me to work harder so I can save up for a trip to France. What was but a dream became a reality on my birthday, Greenwich time. 🙂

I finally saw her… The Iron Lady, Tour Eiffel!

Designed by Gustave Eiffel, this structure towers over Paris like an omnipresent guardian.

For some, this might just be an iron lattice tower but for me, it served as a motivation to work harder and dream bigger.

Allow me to share with you photos and a funny video from that day that I will now cherish for a lifetime.

I asked Rhona to tag along with me coz I cannot leave her during the holidays alone. We have been through tough and good times together. This photo speaks of a sisterly bond that tries to overcome the differences and enjoys the adventures to the hilt. (Although of course if we only had a choice, we would want to hug our “significant others”, if I had one, instead of each other in this picture! hahahaha)DSC07683

This is my cousin C hamming it up for the camera!

Dream Destination Number 1, CHECKED!

Roamed around Paris until we got hungry and rode the train back to Versailles.

We ended the night in a famous creperie in Versailles, A La Cote Brettone, where the owner sang a happy birthday song for me ang gave me chocolate and pistache crepe!

Back at C’s place, I created an improvised wall Christmas tree for him made of casette tape and blu-tac since he is into collecting vinyl records. C and Rhona had fun taking shots of it.

Hope this post and these photos will spread some Christmas cheer to wherever you are reading this from!

DO IT YOURSELF

WHAT LACK OF RESOURCES CAN MAKE YOU DO

I couldn’t make it anymore obvious in my previous posts that I am a poor student living in England.

But I’m still a single lady with a desire to look “young” forever. Grooming is still at the top of the priority list. In my version of Maslow’s heirarchy of needs, image is more important than food. Yes, I am unashamed to declare that “I am vain”, like most of you out there are. 🙂 So let’s stop being sorry for caring about our appearances and start enjoying our vanity products!

Things I’ve learned here that I never in a million years would think I can ever do by myself:

1) Blow-dry my own hair almost everyday. I know it can harm my tresses but this cold weather will give me a headache if I go out with wet hair. I had to learn a technique called “sectioning”. I part my hair in “sections” starting from below upwards. I use a huge brush (£1 in Primark) and Babyliss’ turbo dryer (£10 on sale in Boots). I point the dryer downwards to make my hair look as straight as it is in the photo below.

20121211-110812.jpg

20121211-111335.jpg

2) Thread my own eyebrows. Back in Manila, I go to the salon twice a month to have my brows cleaned. Now, I had to learn how to use a thread and tweeze my own brows. Youtube became my bestfriend. I also now know how to cut my nails (but with some casualties, I broke one nail yesterday! Hahaha)

20121211-112540.jpg

3) Dye my own hair. I used to spend a lot of money to have my hair professionally dyed. I recently got tired of my red hair and decided to turn it into dark brown again. I bought a £5 Clairol foam dye and did it all by myself (But thanks to my classmate Aizee for helping me massage my scalp! Hahaha slumber party!). I was done in 25 minutes! What a huge savings from the £55 that a salon here would charge me for coloring. (Notice the inverted Wilkinson plastic bag I cut to serve as a protective cape?! Hahahah)

20121211-112353.jpg

20121211-115726.jpg

I used to depend on so many people when I prepare for work in the morning–a househelper to wash and iron my clothes, my dearest cousin/housemate to blow-dry my hair. Sometimes I even ask Karen of David’s salon to go to my unit to iron my hair. Too high maintenance! Now I think I’ve proven to myself that one can live independently and still look good and have fun! Yey to DIY!
