I walk through the city center of Peterborough almost every time I have school. It’s been more than 10 months since I started my MBA. I see this Anglian church each time but I never really knew its significance until yesterday.
Apparently, Katharine of Aragon, QUEEN OF ENGLAND, is buried inside this Church!!!
Katharine was the legal wife of Henry VIII who divorced her to marry guess who…Anne Boleyn!!!
Henry VIII had 6 wives. There’s a creepy old English rhyme that goes– ‘Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived’–describing their various ends.
Divorced- Katharine of Aragon. While they were still together, Henry VIII already had a lot of mistresses including Mary, Anne Boleyn’s (his second wife) sister.
Beheaded- Anne Boleyn, executed for high treason, gave him a daughter: Queen Elizabeth I. She failed to give him a son which prompted him to have her investigated for the alleged crime that caused her demise.
Died- Jane Seymour who gave him a son also named Henry
Divorced- Anne of Cleves because he found her unattractive (Why did he marry her in the first place?!)
Beheaded- Catherine Howard
Survived- Katherine of Parr who outlived him
The first wife Katharine left a letter on her deathbed forgiving Henry VIII of his sins against her. Until her last breath she believed that she was the first and only lawful wife.
Henry VIII headed the Church of England which broke away from the Roman Catholic Church because the Pope did not want to grant his annulment from Katharine of Aragon.
I’m not really liking this Henry fella. And I felt for Katharine. Amazing how she can still forgive him after everything he has done. Imagine the disgrace! Bless her heart. Bless all of the women who suffer from injustice. May they find strength from within and learn to stand-up for themselves.
